Utena Tenjou is a normal, athletic 14-year-old (although she looks more like 20) girl attending a typical private school... except for her determination to become a prince when she grows up. Despite (or perhaps because of) the fact that she dresses in boys' uniforms, Utena is the idol of Ohtori Academy. However, when her friend is publicly humiliated, Utena challenges the student to a duel. Little does she know that the duel would spark off a feud involving much more than her friend's pride. After an easy victory, Utena unwillingly becomes the "owner" of the Rose Bride, Anthy Himemiya, a docile, conservative young girl. Utena then sets on a journey through secret societies, honor duels, magic, love, and the end of the world (again). Even though the villains' evil intentions of bringing the world to its demise is seen in almost every other anime, Utena still makes for a very entertaining and emotional series. Utena is one of those series, along with Rurouni Kenshin and Cowboy Bebop, that stands out among the rest. Visually striking, the characters all have a unique flair not seen in other series, and the backgrounds are very imaginative and colorful. The whole series has been released both in Japan and here in America. With a full length movie already out in Japan and on the way over here to the States, Utena's popularity keeps growing and growing. The plot is very fairy tale like, with themes and images of princes and princesses, it is no wonder why this show is a magnet for shoujo fans around the globe. | |||||||
