UTENA TENJOU

Utena Tenjou is the strong-willed, outgoing, biker shorts-wearing heroine of the story who inevitably becomes dragged into the messy business of dueling for the Rose Bride and the End of the World. She attends the prestigious Ohtori Academy and is well-liked by all (well, almost, but we won't get into that) of the girls there, who admire her apparent ability to do everything right. However, Utena, being a main character in an anime, comes from a tragic past. When she was young, her parents died. She was comforted by a prince, who gave her a signet ring. Ever since, she has been determined to find her prince from childhood, and become a prince herself. Utena doesn't dwell too much on the past and is willing to back up her beliefs with the proverbial can of whoop-ass. It is the latter tendency that drives her to challenge a Saionji to a swordfight, which introduces her to the mysterious world of the Rose Duellists.

ANTHY HIMEMIYA

A demure enigma, Anthy is the coveted Rose Bride that all the duelists want possession of for her possible power
to revolutionize the world. She is a very passive, quiet girl who seems to be resigned to her fate of being a prize
to be won or lost. She mostly keeps to herself and passes her time in the rose garden. Only when she becomes "engaged"
to Utena does she start to make her own choices for herself.

TOUGA KIRYUU

Touga is the president of the mysterious Student Council and resident playboy at Ohtori Academy. He seems to know
the most about the End of the World among all the members of the Student Council but keeps his knowledge to himself.
As stated before, he is quite smooth with the ladies, and just about every female in the academy is madly in love with
him, including his sister. The only girl that doesn't return his affections is Utena, so naturally he takes a liking to
her. His developing feelings for her don't stop him from manipulating her and nearly everyone else for his own hidden
purposes, though. Touga is probably the most popular male in the series.

SAIONJI KYOUICHI

|
Saionji is the vice-president of the Student Council and captain of the Kendo team in the academy. He, like his former
best friend Touga, doesn't seem to treat women too well. He used to be the "owner" of Anthy, the Rose Bride, and was
rather mean to her (think "abusive"). When Utena's friend Wakaba sends him a love letter, he posts it publicly in the
school bulletin board for all to see. This leads Utena to challenge him to a duel, which he loses. Saionji's pride is
totally shattered by his loss, and he becomes twisted with jealously over the loss of Anthy. His mental condition takes
a downslide from there.
