Sakuragi Hanamichi is a redheaded, arrogant punk who has withstood 50 rejections from girls. In an attempt to impress his newest crush, Takenori Haruko, he joins the Shohoku High School basketball team. As with so many shonen series, the main character, Hanamichi, starts out very poorly, but begins to gain respect and love for the game.
Hanamichi's ambition to become the best intersects with the lives of many other teams and basketball players, including the calm cool Rukawa Kaede (*ducks under stampede of screaming fangirls*), the giant captain Akagi, and the star of the Ryonan High School Team, Akira Sendoh. This awesome series has been out in Japan for a while now, but many fans worldwide still love Slam Dunk because it is a perfect blend of sports and drama, and a perfect example of anime that is equally geared towards male and female audiences. There's plenty of pulse-pounding basketball action to appease any sport fan's appetite as well as very bishounen basketball players to make all the fan girls happy. Takehiko Inuoe's original 31-volume manga series has been made into an 101-episode TV series, and will be appearing in US stores soon!
