The Oniwabanshu were a group of underground ninja whose duty during the Bakumatsu Era was to protect Edo Castle. However, will the fall of Tokugawa, the Oniwabanshu fell apart - some stayed in Kyoto, and other followed their leaders, Shinomori Aoshi, in his travels.

MISAO MAKIMACHI

A spunky 16-year-old, Misao is the granddaughter of the previous leader of the Oniwabanshu and loves her extended family very much. She idolizes Aoshi and searches for him constantly, a journey which brings her in contact with Kenshin. Although she is till immature, she takes the safety of Kyoto and her new role as temporary leader very seriousy.

NENJI KAWASHIWAZAKI / OKINA

An extremely skilled ninja and the oldest member of the Oniwabanshu, Okina brought Misao up and is like her best friend and mentor. Although he has his perverted moments, Okina can be very serious in matters concerning Misao's safety and the fate of the Oniwabanshu.

The four other surviving members of the Oniwabanshu are four men and women named Okon, Omasu, Kuro, and Shiro. By day, they manage the Aoiya restaurant, which is actually a safehouse for remaining Oniwabanshu members.
