It is ten years into the new, peaceful Meiji Era, and a man previously known as the lethal killer - the Hitokiri Battousai - wanders into Tokyo. His name is Kenshin Himura, and he now lives a life of a peaceful traveller, going from town to town and resolving any problem he encounters. He meets Kaoru Kamiya, a young woman whose Dojo is in trouble, and ends up staying on as a permanent guest in her household. Soon, they are joined by the feisty orphan Yahiko Myojin and the ex-gangster, Sanosuke Sagara. Together, they fight against the numerous enemies from Kenshin's past that return to challenge him, attempt to take over the country, or threaten to harm his loved ones.
Based on the long-running manga by Nobuhiro Watsuki, Rurouni Kenshin is popular for its exciting battle scenes as well as its powerful political statements and ideologies. Kenshin is a pacifist who chooses to protect the weak and innocent with his sword, a contradiciton that is both his greatest weakness and his strongest conviction. Again and again, figures from his murky past arise and threaten the peace of the country, forcing Kenshin and his friends into action. Among the formidable opponents are the Oniwabanshu and the Juppongatana, both powerful groups led by driven, enigmatic men. Kenshin's inner turmoil and the slow revelation of his past are just as involved as the explosive swordplay in the fighting scenes. This stunning anime, with its intense, complex characters and incredible animation, comes in over 90 television episodes, 1 movie, and 4 OAVs. The manga remains highly successful and has recently finished in the weekly comic magazine, Shonen Jump.
