JUBEI

Jubei is the quintessential hero in Ninja Scroll. A wandering samurai
without a master, Jubei survives off of the money he makes in various odd jobs. Unlike some anime heroes though, he doesn’t let his Tragic Past jade him. At the beginning of the
story, Jubei is sent to find a valuable sword for a poor village. However, he
is reluctantly dragged into the business of the Eight Devils of Kimon when he kills one of them. But he soon gains motivation when he learns that their leader is his arch-enemy from the past...

KAGERO
|
|
|
The only female warrior of the Koga Ninja clan, Kagero has the
illustrious job of tasting her master’s food to check for poison. Fortunately, she
is immune to toxins, because her blood is poison. Unfortunately, this
means that she can’t get to close to anybody because her touch could be
fatal. She meets Jubei when she is sent to investigate a plague in Shimota
village and he saves her from one of the Eight Devils of Kimon. Eventually, they
fall in love, overcoming the slight obstacle of Kagero’s poisonous touch.

DAKUWAN
|
|
Jubei’s "sidekick" of sorts, Dakuwan is short, old man that persuades
(more like forces, actually) our hero to face the Eight Devils of
Kimon. As seen through his manipulation of Jubei, Dakuwan isn’t exactly the most
up-front person when it comes to his motives. Actually, he is a spy
for the Tokugawa clan against the Shogun of the Toyatome clan (the baddies).
He also has the strange ability to camouflage himself in order to escape from danger.

LORD HIMURO GEMMA
|
|
|
Himuro Gemma is the leader of the Devils of Kimon, whom Jubei has a
personal vendetta against. Gemma has the unusual power of
regeneration, which means that he’s pretty much immortal. It also means that he fancies
himself to be a god, which leads to his downfall. Gemma has two only
objectives - to take total control over Japan as the "Shogun of the
Dark", and to cause as much pain to Jubei as possible.
