Serial Experiments Lain is one of the most highly acclaimed anime series ever, and was the winner of the Prize for Excellence from the Japan Agency of Cultural Affairs. It has won praise worldwide for its sophisticated blend of animation and computer graphics and its complex story line. Definitely for the more intellectual anime fan, Lain has no big robots, bloody action scenes, or skimpily attired girls. What it offers instead is a thought-provoking study on the difference between real life and life on the "Wired" or Internet.
Lain is a regular 8th grade school girl, quiet and reserved. Her life changes when she receives a mysterious email from a former classmate who had committed suicide, saying she has not died, but merely moved onto the next world. Thus begins Lain's journey into the Wired, where she seeks to discover the meaning of life, her own origins, and the existence of God online. Take a break from mecha action and melodramatic love triangles to tackle the issues brought up by this series. Serial Experiments Lain realistically portrays the isolation and loneliness of the city, and Lain struggles - like many other teenagers - to realize her true potential. As she comes closer to her goal, danger grows in both worlds, challenging her every existence. Lain will have you up all night, attempting to piece together all the puzzles to this masterful series.
