LAIN IWAKURA

8th Grader Lain Iwakura is the central figure in Serial Experiments Lain. An introvert, she is typically shy around people and is even quiet around her dysfunctional family. Her father is only concerned with the internet, or the "Wired." Her mother doesn't seem to like Lain at all, and her sister becomes a scary vegetable in the middle of the series. But troubles at home don't compare to the weird things that start to happen elsewhere in her life. At school, a classmate kills
herself, yet Lain is contacted by her the next day. At the Cyberia Café, Lain confronts a mad man with a gun in his hand. He seems totally frightened of her, and then proceeds to decorate the walls with his blood. What is it about Lain that has people so scared? After being introduced to the Wired through her new computer, a Navi, Lain is drawn deeper into the web, and further away from reality.

MIKA IWAKURA

Mika is Lain's older sister, despite the lack of sibling love between the two. Her relationship with the rest of the Iwakura family is strained, as she often does whatever she wants, disregarding her parents' wishes. Unlike most of the other characters in the series, she isn't interested in the possibilities of The Wired, preferring the old-fashioned methods of interaction. Midway through the series, after an encounter with a mysterious group of people called Knights, her mind caves in and she goes insane. After that, not much character development occurs.

ALICE MIZUKI

|
Alice is Lain's classmate and only real friend. She often hangs out with two other classmates, Juri and Reika. Alice is very kind to Lain and tries to help her lead a more normal life outside of the Wired, which initally succeeding. She acts as the "straight man" of their group of friends and often chides the other two girls for teasing Lain. Alice is the person that cares most about Lain in the series, and vice versa.
