From Hideaki Anno, director of the highly acclaimed, shocking, and controversial series Neon Genesis Evangelion, comes... a series on high school romance? Although Kare Kano, (also known as Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou or His and Her Circumstances) is a great departure from the violent and complex drama of Evangelion, it is also a very unique and serious look at the relationships that are formed in the high school years. Relationships with significant others, family members, and friends, are carefully examined and scrutinized by Anno's masterful direction.
At the center of the story is the relationship between Yukino - the idol of the school, with her gracious manners, good grades, and beauty - and Arima, captain of the school Kendo Club, and Yukino's equal in school status. The series focuses on the real problems that arise from romantic relationships, especially in high school. Issues of morality, jealousy, sex, and betrayal spread through the lives of the main couple, along with the rest of the eclectic cast. Oh yeah, about the cast - be prepared to be exposed to lots of characters! Fortunately, they are all very dynamic, from the cute yet deadly Tsubasa, to the arrogant Asaba, who looks upon girls as "sheep" and dreams of building his "Asaba Merry Land". (You'll have to watch the show to see what that means) Kare Kano is currently available only in Japan, but a small US distributor has just picked it up, so look for it here in the near future.
