The only anime ever to attain a world-wide simultaneous release, Ghost in the Shell deserves a place in the heart of every true otaku. With stunning animation and a complex storyline, the quality of GitS is rarely matched, even today.
At first, Ghost in the Shell may seem like a top-notch futuristic action/adventure story, but it is much, much more than that. The setting is a future world where the lines of reality and technology start to blur. Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg, is sent to investigate the mysterious "Puppet Master", who hacks into the very minds of his victims. Political intrigue between different factions of the government only adds more to the plot as Motoko discovers there is more to the case than meets the eye. What is the meaning of being "human"? Is there a price on our humanity, with all its flaws and blessings? If so, can the unerring efficiency of machines in pursuit of social order be a fair bargain? These are questions the audience and the movie's heroine must face.
