Motoko Kusanagi  MOTOKO KUSANGI
Motoko works for the team in Section 9, directing her comrades Togusa and Batou. She herself is under the command of Chief Aramaki. She used to work for the Ministry of Home Affairs, or the military, but her memories of that time are somewhat unclear. This is the result of her decision to convert her whole body into a cybernetic titanium shell, which is quite a common practice in the Ghost in the Shell universe. Motoko’s mind is altered as well; only some of her original brain cells remain. Using her "sub-brain (the mechanized part), she can access all computer networks on Earth, which comes in handy considering her job. However, due to her heavy internal and external modifications, she questions her existence, providing GitS’s insightful theme of questioning humanity.

BATOU  Batou
Aside from being Motoko’s trusty partner in Section 9 for several years, not much else is known about Batou. He also has had the necessary modifications to his mind and body to suit the demands of his work. Batou acts as the voice of reason to Motoko, who has a tendency to be a bit headstrong at times.

Togusa  TOGUSA
The newest transfer to Section 9 from the police department, Togusa is the most human (physically) of all its members. Except for slight changes to his brain enabling him to access the cyber-net, all of his human body remains, which sometimes causes the others in Section 9 to treat him differently. He is the only member of the team that is married.

PUPPET MASTER  Puppet Master
Code name "Project 2501", Puppet Master was a program created by Section 6 (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) to serve as an agent. It has the ability to access all the computer networks in the world, like Motoko. However, it somehow develops conscious thought beyond that of a mere program and announces itself to be "alive". Shortly afterwards, Puppet Master escapes in the body of a (naked) female, causing much trouble for Section 6 in efforts to get it back. Its actions, namely hacking into the minds of human victims, cause Motoko to ponder her humanity further throughout the course of the story.
