One day during a study session, they stumble upon an ancient Chinese book called "Universe of the Four Gods" and begin reading it. The two girls discover that as they read, the story in the book will come to life at the turn of a page. Before they realize it, they are drawn into the world inside the book, and their fantastical adventure begins! They find themselves in a world much like ancient China and eventually learn about the war between the two countries of Konan to the south and Kutou to the east. Each country is seeking its own legendary "miko," or priestess, to call upon its protective deity. Once summoned, the god can grant three wishes and destroy the opposing country. Miaka and Yui are separated as they become the miko for each warring nation, placing them at odds with each other and stretching their friendship to its limits. Fushigi Yuugi takes place in a world of magic and romance, where ancient grudges threaten to destroy the peace, and where the power of friendship must overcome hate and jealousy. Based on the 18-volume manga by Yuu Watase, Fushigi Yuugi, or "The Mysterious Play," is a popular shoujo anime with 52 TV episodes, 6 OAVs, and 6 drama CDs.
