The setting is Tokyo 3, 2015. Over a decade after half the world's population perished in an unexplained attack, mankind continues to struggle in its rebuilding and prepares for the next possible attack - a predicted wave of destruction that would mean the end of humanity itself - the Third Impact. The carriers of this prophecy are the mysterious beings known as "Angels," creatures who descend from space and leave widescale chaos in their wake. To guard against their constant threat, the enigmatic NERV agency heads the research and deployment of defensive tactics, the latest being the terrifying Evangelions. Disturbingly humanoid in appearance, EVAs are mankind's best and most desperate hope against the Angels. These powerful machines can only be piloted by children born exactly 9 months after the Second Impact - the attack which destroyed half the world. Humanity must place its fate in the hands of these fragile teenagers, who themselves are unwitting pawns of NERV's hidden agenda.
As the children confront the Angels and face their own fears, the shocking origins of the EVAs slowly come to light. Layers of lies are stripped away to reveal an ancient link to the Angels and NERV's secret plans - a frightening project which will ultimately place destiny in mankind's own hands.
