HITOMI KANZAKI

Hitomi is just a normal girl (get used to this theme) living a normal life in high school. Her best friend, Yukari, encourages her to confess her feelings to Amano, the track team captain. Suddenly, Hitomi is transported to Gaea, another world war-torn but full of good-looking bishounen males. What's a girl to do? Very supportive and cheerful, Hitomi believes in right and wrong, and is very protective of those she cares about. Altough she is gifted with the power to predict the future with her Tarot Cards and dowsing pendant from her grandmother, Hitomi doesn't want to use her powers to harm others.

VAN SLANZAR DE FANEL

The boy King of Fanelia, a kingdom surrounded by the Dragons of Gaea, Van is thrust into the
seat of the Throne after his father's death and the disappearance of his older brother, Folken.
Impetuous and foolhardy, Van believes in fighting for honor, evident in his often quoted words,
"I'll never turn my back on the enemy!" He hides a secret about his lineage, which supposedly
comes from a race of beings far superior to mankind. He refuses help from Hitomi at first, but
comes to trust and depend on her later in the show.

ALLEN SCHEZAR

Proclaimed the "Heavenly Knight" of the Asturia Kingdom, this dashing and gallant swordsman wows
his allies with his chivalry and scares his enemies with his deadly sword techniques. Extremely
good looking, Allen is one of the more popular bishounen around, with legions of female fans,
both in the Escaflowne series and in real life. He lives by a strict moral code (excluding
women of course), and carries out his duties like any faithful Knight should. He is also on a mission
to look for his little sister, Celena, who was kidnapped a long time ago. Allen befriends Van and
Hitomi near the beginning of the series, and seems closer to her than Van likes.

DILANDAU ALBATOU

Appropriately nicknamed the "Diabolical Adonis" by the series' creators, Dilandau is a crazy,
albino-looking freak, who also happens to be adored by millions of fans worldwide. Dilandau hides
a terrible secret, which proves to be one of Escaflowne's biggest surprises. Often dressed in
fiery red and spewing flames from his Guymelef Alseides, Dilandau is a very violent man bent on destruction
and killing Van. He is also the leader of the Dragon Slayers, an elite fighting group of the
Zaibach army, the faction plotting to take over Gaea. If they only knew what Dilandau was really
like inside his heart...

FOLKEN LACQUER DE FANEL

|
Not much is known about this mysterious enigma. Covered with a cloak and preferring to stay in
the background, he is the Strategos (Strategist) of the Zaibach Empire. Although working for
the evil empire and personally with Dilandau, he does not share the same lust for killing, and prefers to negotiate with the enemy in order to get ahead. He calls the war full of "senseless killing" and his goals may not be the same as his colleagues. What drives this man to do the things he does? Why does Folken bear the same last name as Van? Could this cold, brooding man be the same dear brother that Van lost so long ago?
