The main character of Angel Sanctuary, Setsuna is just a typical high school boy, who loves to hang out with his friends and occasionally gets into some fights. His best friend is Kira, who has always looked after him, and thus leads a regular life. In fact, the only challenge he faces in his life is his forbidden love for Sara, a feeling he fights against but can not deny. His life will be turned inside out when it is revealed that he is in fact the reincarnation of Alexiel, one of the first and most powerful angels from Heaven. In an instant, Setsuna is caught up in the battle between Heaven and Hell. Sides will be taken, loyalties will be broken, and conflicts will spill in the form of blood all over the streets. How will Setsuna deal with all this and at the same time search his feelings for Sara?

Returning Setsuna's love for her, she too is tormented by the obstacles that stand in their way. Very caring and protective of Setsuna, she is shown to be sweet and kind natured. She makes the ultimate sacrifice for Setsuna, and is sent to Hell for her actions. Setsuna spends a lot of time looking for Sara, going through Hell and all it's ghastly accommodations to bring her back to the land of the living. Sara is by no means a tough Anime female lead like Faye Valentine or Lina Inverse, yet her quiet strength and determination makes her highly respectable and very likeable.

KIRA SAKUYA

He is Setsuna's best friend and often acts like an older brother/mentor to the brash Setsuna. Always there to get Setsuna out of a jam, Kira is one of the most well-loved characters in the Angel Sanctuary universe. Typically funny, happy, and carefree, his loyalty to his friends is unquestioned. There are questions about his past, and Kira is not what everyone thinks he is. There are deep and dark secrets that lurk within his soul, enough to tear any person apart. Kira's revelation of who he really is provides of the most shocking, yet undeniably cool parts of Angel Sanctuary.
